Buyer research
Common pre-purchase questions on the HSD Reference 12.
In a booth or on a wedge line you are standing close to the box, where separate LF and HF drivers smear into two arrival points. The Reference 12's HF compression driver fires through the center of the 12″ LF cone, so the whole spectrum arrives from one point with a symmetric 80 × 80-degree pattern, near-field reproduction that stays coherent when the performer moves.
Powered ($3,900) carries built-in 3,000 W amplification and premium DSP with FIR filters, XLR in, done. Passive ($2,400) is bi-amped (LF 500 W / HF 80 W continuous, 8 ohms per section): two channels of an HSD KP Series amp run one cabinet, so a four-channel KP drives a pair with all processing in the rack.
Variable mounting solutions cover booth, stage, and install duty, including pole-mount compatibility with the DJ18 subwoofer monitor below it, the two are designed as a stack. At 44 lbs it is the lightest cabinet on this page by a wide margin.
Yes, HSD builds a full monitor package: the compact Reference 8 ($1,400), the Source 15 ($1,900 passive / $3,200 powered), and the DJ21 ($3,300 / $5,500). All are listed in the additional products table on our HSD hub page; ask us to spec the right booth package.
System design
The Reference 12 tops HSD's monitoring stacks and handles fill duty in installs.
The designed-together partner: the Reference 12 pole-mounts over the DJ18 for a 27 Hz–20 kHz booth stack.
Passive version: bi-amped on two KP channels; one 4-channel amp runs a stereo pair.
The rest of HSD's monitor package, from near-field to 15″ wedges, see the additional products table.
