Why put a 27 Hz subwoofer in a DJ booth?

Because performers mix what they feel. Most booth monitors quit around 40 Hz, so the DJ hears a different low end than the crowd, and overcompensates. The DJ18's 18″ driver with a 4″ voice coil holds -3 dB to 27 Hz, giving the booth the same foundation as the main system.

Should I buy the passive or powered DJ18?

Powered ($4,900) is the self-contained answer: built-in 3,000 W amplification and premium DSP with FIR filters, fed by XLR, drop it in the booth and go. Passive ($2,500) suits installs with amp racks: 1,500 W continuous at 8 ohms, driven from one HSD KP Series or KD Series channel, keeping all processing in one place.

How does it work with the Reference 12?

They are designed as a set. The DJ18 is pole-mount compatible, so a Reference 12 coaxial monitor flies directly above it, a full-range booth stack from 27 Hz to 20 kHz on one footprint. It is the cornerstone of HSD's performance monitoring line.

Can it do stage monitoring beyond DJ booths?

Yes, drum fill sub duty, side-fill low end, and event spaces where a compact 125 lb sub with real extension is needed. The same passive/powered choice applies, and the powered version's DSP handles alignment to whatever sits above it.
